Elderly workers are left behind on the job market, the employment rate for those who are still well below the target of 80% of the government, according to the Aging state 2025 Better published Center for Aging Center for this week.
The report also highlights Stark regional inequalities, with more than three times more than 50 to 64 years in the south-east compared to the northeast, providing an increase of 86 billion pounds sterling to the southeast economy while other regions are fighting-in particular in the North West, where poor health is a major obstacle to employment.
Steve Butler, CEO of Potential pension, who is part of Punter Southall, agrees with the conclusions and urges the government and the employers to act. “The traditional cliff retirement model is exceeded. Many older workers want flexible options or a gradual transition to retirement, but working policies and practices have not followed the pace. Today, many people in their fifties and sixty are looking for this. ”
Without action – as mid -life career journals, flexible work and better retention strategies – Butler warns that older workers are faced with a “perfect storm” to be unable to withdraw but who fights to stay at work.
Dr. Carole Easton, managing director of the Center for Agging Better, adds that regional inequalities pile up more likely against older job seekers. “Where you live has a huge impact on your job prospects in their fifties and 60 years.”
Emily Andrews of the Center for Agging Better calls for calls for urgent reform before any change in state retirement age, pleading for more financial assistance
“These are not only job figures,” adds Butler. “It is a question of recognizing the value that elderly workers bring to the workplace and to ensure that they have the support they need to continue to contribute.”
